‘Trekkers’

Did you know? It is estimated that in the UK only 4% of children with a disability attend church. There are over 4,500 registered children with a disability in Birmingham. There are 436 registered children with a disability in B13 (Queensbridge postcode). These children and their families are the inspiration behind a ministry of care for special needs. We hope to encourage families of children with disabilities to become part of the family of Riverside Church by looking at ways in which we can empower families through support, to realise and share their unique spiritual gifts. The success of this ministry is the strong foundation of acceptance and compassion that is already present within Riverside.

Last year we started a small group for parents with children with special needs. This September we began a new class on Sunday mornings to better meet the needs of some of the children in Riverside. The mission for ‘Trekkers’ is to provide a safe and nurturing environment as we demonstrate God’s love and teach the gospel message of Jesus Christ in a way that is creative and accessible to children of all abilities.

In 2011 we hope to have an evangelistic impact on the community by developing a once a month Saturday playscheme supporting all children with disabilities, their siblings and parents, in the Kings Heath/Moseley communities.
