Birmingham Celebrates Christmas

Carols in the City was a great success blessing many, many lives across Birmingham on Saturday 11th December, with the backing and support of Birmingham’s City Council. Five churches took responsibility for 5 key areas across the City Centre – offering present wrapping, balloons, chocolates, festive face-painting, carols, music and other street entertainment – all speaking of God’s overflowing grace.

Riverside took responsibility for Brindleyplace with many of us based around the bandstand from 2-4pm. Our Christmas choir blessed passers-by with 3 slots of carolling. Elise (RSPA) fronted a contemporary Christmas band with Damian, Laura & Themba, and the afternoon was interspersed with Andy King’s crowd-pulling Christmas ‘Deal or No Deal’. Others in the team face-painted, gave out chocolates, flyers, balloons and chatted with people.

The central event attracted several thousand people – churchgoers and passers-by alike – for a lively and joyful celebration of Christmas. MC’d by local radio presenter and Christian, Nikki Tapper, it included a short message launching a ‘Million Acts of Kindness’ across the City as well as prayers led by Bishop David Urquhart following a news review video of 2010.

Church leaders and event organisers hosted a reception for the Lord Mayor, himself a man of Christian faith, who has great enthusiasm for the event as well as the City and further possible events across the calendar.
