Ladies’ Afternoon Tea

Following several years of popular ladies’ craft and canapés evenings, we decided to embrace the trend for Afternoon Tea and host a Ladies’ Afternoon Tea at Riverside House. The afternoon gave opportunity to bless friends with hospitality and also to raise awareness and money for Brazilian Charity Meninadanca. We welcomed around 50 guests for sandwiches, cream teas, cakes and live music, whilst highlighting the work that Meninadanca does amongst exploited young girls in Brazil with a monologue describing some of the work they are forced into. From the Afternoon Tea and a cake sale in the canteen the following day, we have donated £400 to Meninadanca!

Ladies attending included those who had previously enjoyed craft events, a group of “July birthdays” being treated by a friend, contacts from Pineapple and Ladypool Road Stay and Plays, along with friends of Riversiders. Their response to the event confirms that God answered our prayer that they feel welcome, loved and catch a glimpse of how our faith is expressed in helping others who have so little. Reactions from guests have included a desire to host further fundraising events for Meninadanca, and an overwhelming sense of being cared for while at Riverside House.

A more unexpected outcome of the afternoon has been connections between those whose hearts are being challenged by God with regard to how women view themselves, and the sad truth that exploitation is not only something that happens in other countries. It’s possible that this is the beginning of something new – that God wants us to seek Him and work out how we can bring His kingdom and hope in seemingly hopeless situations here in Birmingham.
