Run the race!

This morning, 13 Riversiders are running 13 miles through the streets of Birmingham. Some for fun (!), some raising money for a variety of causes, including Riverside Money Advice, Meninadanca (the charity that the women of Riverside supported earlier this year), Tearfund, and for those going to Kenya next month, as well as a number of others. Bring your kids along on their stroller from so they can enjoy the run.

Hebrews 12:1-3:
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.
As I run today, I remember the feeling last year when I heard my name being called out by other Riversiders and also complete strangers. I sensed that heavenly finish line, with its cloud of witnesses calling “keep going, don’t give up, well done!”.

The half-marathon distance is great for being an example of something that naturally you can’t do, but with discipline and training it is possible. It also illustrates the tension between something you can give up at any time and keeping going.

May we as a church be focused on the race set before us, to live lives that glorify our Father and encourage one another along the way.
