Vision to grow

Vision to growJay Thomas-Morton joined Riverside Church in September 2004.  His passion for communicating the gospel to the deaf community connected with a God-given vision of setting up a small group, Alpha course and “Word of Hands” – the idea of running church in British Sign Language.  This all began to happen from January 2006 and continues in the present day. This week is the 8th anniversary of the first meeting of the BSL Sign Small Group – the predecessor to Word of Hands.

Vision to grow. Our small group is similar to every other small group within the Church – we worship together, study the Bible, pray and eat together. (Deaf people are passionate about food!) The only difference being that all meetings are led in British Sign Language – the preferred language of Deaf people.  In the last 8 years, we have touched the lives of over 100 Deaf people and hearing signers.  We are making inroads into the Deaf community and planting seeds with people through various social events.

People travel to BSL services from much further afield than you might consider to get to church, because the provision of sign language for churches is scarcer.Vision to grow...

What are you seeking God for right now? A new job? Greater provision? New ministry? New vision? Listen: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”  Jeremiah 29:11-13 (NIV)
