09/11/08 Baptism - A POEM TO GOD Clair Boots
  As a general rule,
I can swim in a pool
At any time of the day;

Am I losing my grip
By taking a dip
In quite so public a way?

Why should I risk it –
And get dunked like a biscuit
In an overly large coffee cup?

How do I know
They won’t let me go?
Will I drown if they don’t haul me up?

Are you really so sure
That it means something more
If I’m thoroughly soaked to the skin?

And the very next time
I step out of line,
Will they show up and chuck me back in?!

Now I’ve set out a few of my doubts, maybe they’ll ask me to leave;

But let me clear that the reason I’m here boils down to what I believe:

I believe that You show
The way life should go
In the things that You did and You said.

You helped and accepted
The hurt and rejected –
Despite dying, You didn’t stay dead.

I believe You possess
And love to express
What is good, what is right, what is true;

And I believe we can trust
That You love all of us
And You want us to know that You do.

I believe that I’m free
To be fully me
As I dance through my days with You,

So baptism’s a way
To simply say
GOD – I’m sticking with You.
