Sewing workshop in Guatemala

Sewing workshop in GuatemalaHere at Riverside, it’s thrilling to be involved in activities that make a huge difference to people’s lives. Whether it is things here in Birmingham and the UK, or further afield around the world, people are genuinely having their lives transformed.

Following months of hard work by aROMa (our missions team) and ELiJAH (ethical living, justice, action and hope team), Riverside has partnered with a development project of AMG International in Guatemala City. AMG is the organisation with which Emma (nee Thomas) and Hector Perez work, supporting drug-dependent young people living on the streets and children at risk.

Funds donated by Riverside will support a sewing workshop for single mothers of children at AMG’s school who are living in extreme poverty, many of whom have suffered violence and abuse. Young women who have achieved the difficult step of leaving the streets but can’t find work (affecting their ability to pay rent and stay off the streets), are also helped.

A tutor teaches sewing skills, while the project will provide more sewing machines and a small wage to the women enabling them to feed their families while they are learning. The vision is that they will eventually be able to start their own sewing business or be able to get a good reference for employment e.g. in a clothing factory, to be replaced in the project by new students. We aim that each woman will be mentored through a local church.

Please pray that God will change the lives of the women through their participation in this project.
