Real Riverside Football

Football FocusReal Riverside football has now been in existence for 10 years and we are proud to have won the sportsmanship trophy, awarded for fair play, on 3 occasions.

As leaders, we encourage the players to play within the rules of the game and show respect for each other, and for the opposition and match officials – it is very rare that we have any major disciplinary issues.  It’s quite a challenge as a majority of the players are not from a Christian background and are mainly only interested in playing, but it’s also an opportunity to make friends and socialise with them which opens a window to share our faith sometimes.

Real Riverside team 2013-2014.jpgBoth the A and B teams have been promoted again. We have seen the skill of some younger players from within the church mature and become part of the team for some games – Callum Bird, who has become an integral part of the B team, Anthony Agamah and Asher Beardsmore.

The Christian influence, particularly in the B team, has rubbed off on one of the younger non-churched players, who I had the pleasure of sharing our faith with. In reference to the young players from Riverside Church he said, “the players from church are really nice and I enjoy playing with them”.

Our aim as Christians in a football team is to lead by example and show we can enjoy the same sport and life in general, but do it with integrity and show others there really is a better goal to aim at!

Matthew 5:14-16You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.  Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that[a] they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven
